Up and Coming: Four Things to Remember when Hiring Generation Z

You hear about Generation Y or Millennials so often - how to hire, attract and retain this group of employees. We’ve discussed, analyzed and theorized this generation to provide a work environment that aligns with their thoughts, beliefs and motivations. As we round out getting the Millennials into the workforce, it’s time to start thinking about the up and comers – Generation Z.

While Generation Z isn’t too different from their predecessors, they do have their own unique characteristics, thus shouldn’t be lumped in with the Millennials. Here are four things to remember when you’re looking to recruit and hire Generation Z.

  1. Leaving the World a Better Place: Gen Z candidates are looking to make a real impact on the world and they want the company they work for to do the same. During the interview process showcase your company culture by sharing all the opportunities for volunteering, events and services projects your company has taken part in. Thirty percent would even take a pay cut to work for a company with a mission they care about.

  2. Money Talks: While Gen Z isn’t completely caught up in money, it does matter. With the average college student walking away with a diploma in one hand and an average of $37,172 in student loan debt in the other, you can guarantee they’ll be looking at the salary. A competitive salary and benefits package will be calling their name.

  3. They Want to Grow: Generation Z plans to work hard to get where they want but your company needs to ensure the opportunity for growth is provided. They plan to work for companies for the long-haul, with Gen Z saying they anticipate to only work for four companies in their lifetime. They recognize advancement doesn’t happen overnight but they do expect to move up and eventually manage other employees.

  4. They Crave Human Interaction: One way Gen Z differs from Millennials is they want the face-to-face communication but are very ingrained and comfortable with technology. This generation will want plenty of feedback much like Millennials, but provide this feedback in a one-on-one setting and do it often.

The next generation in the workforce is coming, and while they aren’t too different from the previous workforce they do require a new formula to recruiting and hiring.
