Ten Tips for a Successful Interview
- Be punctual. Always arrive 10-15 minutes before your scheduled appointment. There is never a good excuse for being late.
- Be prepared. Bring a portfolio with extra copies of your resume, two pens that work, written questions for the interviewer, and blank paper to take notes.
- Be professional. This starts with wearing professional business attire and being respectful at all times. A firm handshake with proper eye contact upon introduction is the right first impression.
- Be positive. In every exchange avoid negativity. This means focusing on skills that you do have and not the skills that you don’t.
- Be attentive. Listen carefully, never interrupt, and answer questions clearly and concisely.
- Be specific. When talking about your experience always cite specific examples where you performed a task or duty. Using the STAR approach to answering questions is a great start.
S- Situation. What was the situation?
T- Task. What was the task you needed to accomplish?
A- Action. What actions did you take?
R- Result. What happened as a result of your action. - Be assertive. Communication skills and showing self-confidence are keys to success. Be confident without going overboard.
- Ask questions. Show that you are interested by having insightful questions about the job and your prospective role. These questions should allow you to elaborate on how your skills can help their company.
- Take action. Inquire about next steps, confirm that you have given them the information they need to make a hiring decision, and establish an expectation for follow up. If it is appropriate, ask for the job.
- Follow up. Send a thank you note and follow up with a call. Be sure to complete any action items you have established.
