Job Search Tips
- When answering interview questions, try to eliminate negative language. Instead of saying “I failed”, say “I learned from my mistakes” or, “I had a valuable learning experience.”
- Refrain from saying negative things about a previous employer.
- Be sure to update all your information on career websites- Career builder, Monster, Linkedin, etc. as soon as a change takes place. Without accurate information, recruiters can’t find you, and you won’t be considered for the next great opportunity.
- List your most current work experience first on your resume. Then list the remaining experiences in reverse chronological order.
- Don’t be afraid to follow up via email after a phone interview. Show your interest, but limit yourself to contacting every-other day, or less.
- Have answers prepared for the interview questions every interviewer asks. For example “Tell me a little bit about yourself” shouldn’t catch you off guard, and “Why do you want to work for me?” should be a no-brainer.
- Resumes with fancy fonts in text boxes, lovely graphics, dancing animations, etc. look nice, but it makes it painful to import into a recruiters’ database.
- The Iowa Workforce Development office stated in 2009 that applicants commonly fail to list position titles on their applications- be sure to list the position you’re applying for.
- Always treat a phone interview as you would a face to face interview- no food, children, or outside conversations going on.
